Open Gym Info
Hi just wanted to share a little bit from what i had experienced around town.Tuesdays Quick update on
Lake Grove Elementary on Tuesday Nights. Residents Are $2 and Non are $4. Two Courts.Fairly small Gym.
The nets are not real vball standards. I couldnt seem to find the court's lines? The play is eh....
Mostly the residents play. Not a "power" site.. Really mellow and a lot of fireman style vball. Nice
group of folks. 830-10pmish
Marshall Center Update. $5.50 and no specials for Oregon folks. Play: is ok, not really consistant. A
lot of hitters but not a lot of passers or setters. 7-930pm still 2 courts. Note keep track of the score.
Athey Creek still $2 830-10pm.2-3 courts on who shows up. Play: Not that bad the court is a little slippery,
either too much dust mixed in with worn out floor. Nice group. Note keep track of the score.
Monday
Mt Scott Comunity Center. Update $5.50 but there is a non resident package you can purchace if you go often.
Mondays 730-930 2 courts. they have a 36 person max on players. so only 6 teams. Recently it has been filling
up by 7pm why i havent the slightest clue. Play: can be better then most. Mixed bag of folks and skills,
this is very apparent. The courts are a little slippery from dust and worn out floor. Note. keep track of the
score.
There is a Sunday play from 12 -2pm Ill have to see what it is up with that, to further verify quality.
Hope this helps. Take care Austin
Thanks Austin, great info - Mark

More Open Gym Options
We are officially starting open gym Volleyball starting on Friday January 7th
-and in fact, we are running on Fridays- for about 6 months
It will be for power players initially; normally my business is an an-all
inclusive recreational bunch, but - for this open play volleyball- to restate
this- this program will be for competitive men/women (co-ed play)
In fact, we ran a test run with 10-players a few Fridays ago and it was great
play. The facility is right off of the Glisan (I-205) exit and it is a high
quality facility… the facility is Cascade College. The location is great for
high level volleyballs on the eastside- anywhere along I-205 from
Camas/Vancouver to West Linn even (15 minutes away).
Click on our volleyball link found at www.portlandbasketball.com
and or call for more information (phone) 503-380-4539.
If you know of any recreational players looking for a gym, this
same gym will host a recreational group at some point but we do not
have the interest as of yet-
Sincerely, Mikal Duilio

I may have forgotten a few. I hope there are a few more grass tournaments but we'll
see.

Open Gyms Updated
I've tried my best to update the open gym section. I took out the YMCA's, obviously
if you have to be a member that hinder's everybody's ability to play there. Also
I've heard that play is geared more for family's than skilled players.
The three gyms I've been playing at lately are The Courts, Hillside and Marshall Rec
in Vancouver. I went to Athey Creek once and it was actually pretty good, but it's so
far away and so late that it's hard to justify the drive.
If you are going to The Courts get there early, otherwise you'll be shutout. Last two
times I've been there it's eventually filled.
Marshall has been pretty weak on some nights so if you poke your head in and it's not
up to par, and don't mind the drive, head on down to Athey Creek in West Linn.
Hillside is pretty consistent week to week, and the least intimadating. I can't
remember the last time I went and the play wasn't at least at a B level or
better. Still very tough to find.

Open Gyms
Open gyms are starting to fill out but they're pretty inconsistent. Marshall Center is
getting just enough for two teams and play is sometimes good enough for a backrow setter.
Although I did find myself playing doubles most of the night that last time I went.
The courts are packed! Last time I went they cut it off after there were enough for
13 teams. While there were alot of people I would say that play was good but not
great. Most teams were playing with a backrow setter but the passing was pretty
sketchy on the far courts.
Went to Athey Creek last Tuesday and it was full. Because there are 3 courts one
is a women's only court on the far end that plays at a pretty competitive level
and is probably the most competitive women's court I know of. For some reason
two novice guys felt need to play with them BUT I would strongly recommend
against it. Leave it to the ladies.

Northwest Asian Sports who have been putting on VB tournaments for the

organized. Check the side links for their website

Tournaments
I spent this afternoon updating as best I could the tournament section with grass tourny's
from around the Northwest. I was only going to put in the Portland/Vancouver stuff but that
amount to about 4-5 tourneys. If you prefer grass then I guess you'll making a few trips
north. Although it looks like there' a few in Tumwater, Olympia and Lacey which if you are
from Vancouver that slices some time off the drive.
I've played a few times in the Sand and I can't deny what a great workout it is but it's
tough mentally to 'adjust' to such a tough surface. Not sure I'll play in any sand tourny's
but I won't rule it out either.

Summer is HERE!!!
For those young enough to take advantage of the great weather AND play VB in it .. I envy you.
I stepped into the sand for the first time in years and I'm still feeling it.

Open Gym Update
Got this email from a local VB playa:
Mt. Scott Park was packed on monday. They have 2 courts, but allow 35 people to sign up
(5 teams of 7). The time has changed to 7-9 (you have 7:30-9:30), as has the price,
which is now $3.75.
I cycled up to Hillside yesterday (thursday), which was a good
workout. The gym was completely empty at 6:45. Was this because it was 99 degrees? The
worker there had never worked a thursday before, so she wasn't sure of the regular
turnout
Summer isn't a great time for indoor VB but if you keep looking around I think the courts and
southwest rec both are good places as well as Mt. Scott. Thx for info!!!

New Place to play
OK, we'll maybe it's just new to me. The Courts in the Pearl are open and ready for rentals. I don't see a drop
in night but I'd like to see something on Sundays or Thursdays. Honestly what could be better on first Thursdays
in the Pearl- Wine, Art and Volleball.

Cleaning out the Cob Webs
Trying to clean up this website and update all information. I've tried my best to clean up the
links and I'll focus on the Leagues and Tournaments in the next few days. It's a little like
walking into an old house you haven't visited in a while, everything is still there just trying
to remember where it's at.

Long time no see.. and no play 2
Oh dear lord, for some reason I came out of retirement a few months ago because I lost a little weight.
I realize now it was my ego, that thing was about 25lbs... who knew?
As I get round to some of the old stomping grounds again I'll try to give you an updated assessment
of the Open gyms. Right now the courts in Beaverton on Friday night are easily the best time
around. I've been to Marshall on a few night and this comes close due to the selective nature of the
staff. At Marshal Center in Vancouver not all players are selected to play on the top court so this does lead to very competitive play. I was also asked to play on a league there and was very impressed with the level of competition.
Don't be a stranger, if you see me out there and dont recognize me because I'm getting roofed or worse yet limping around please say hi.
